The Nitrogen Cycle

The nitrogen cycle is an underappreciated fact of life. It basically is the reason that plants can grow, that dead things are broken down into something useful, and it is the reason we are still alive! I would like to discuss that cycle in detail now:

We will start the cycle with an animal that dies and begins to decompose. As this happens, ammonia is released from the dead animal which can undergo two different paths.

The first is by nitrifying bacteria which have the ability to convert that ammonia into what are known as nitrates.

The second path is by denitrifying bacteria which are able to take ammonia and release it as nitrogen gas into the soil.

This nitrogen gas is then able to be taken up by nitrogen fixing bacteria on the roots of legumes which then convert the nitrogen gas into nitrates.

After nitrates are formed, they can be taken up by plants and used for plant growth. This is a primary ingredient in fertilizers for good reason, proteins can't be made without nitrates.

After all this, the plants are then consumed by animals which then relay the whole process over again, only to the continued enjoyment and living of people all around the world!
