Gestational Diabetes - What is it?
Have you ever heard of the term gestational diabetes? Are you at risk for gestational diabetes? How does it even begin? In this 'intel' I will answer those questions for you. Who is the most at risk for gestational diabetes? Well, in a nutshell, anyone that is pregnant! There is no proven fact regarding who is most at risk, besides heredity, since it can happen at random. The whole mechanics of gestational diabetes begin as a result of the developing baby inside of the mom's womb. In order to receive the nutrients that the baby needs to fully develop, the fetus release a hormone known as HcS. This in effect is an insulin-suppressor; in other words, it enters mom's blood stream and suppresses the effect of insulin, which is to take blood sugar into tissues and store it. This in effect can cause problems for mom since it mimics the effects of diabetes! At first glance, this may appear like a parasitic move by the baby, and it is in some sense! The baby does need nutrients though, and this is one way to make sure that it gets first dibs on all of the good blood sugar before mom can get to it. The mom is indeed involved in sacrifice for the good of her baby even before it comes out of her! What is the cure for gestational diabetes you might ask? The cure in one simple word is BIRTH! That is really the only true solution for a mom who has gestational diabetes, though she may take insulin in order to help her body through the rough effects of gestational diabetes. |
