Diabetes Type 1 and 2

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes? How does diabetes even begin? I hope to answer some of these questions as well as make an awareness about what we can all do to prevent diabetes.

Type 1 - This type of diabetes is usually associated with childhood, and is factored in by heredity. It may occur from some kind of immune response where the immune system becomes over-active, perhaps during a cold or flu, and as a result attacks special glucose receptors located on the beta cells of the pancreas.

Type 2 - This type is somewhat preventable and is often associated with obesity. In essence, the body produces insulin to break down sugars in the blood, but when that occurs in excess (due to obesity, lack of exercise), the pancreatic cells develop a sort of immunity to glucose in order to stop the production and release of insulin. As a result, insulin is no longer released, and the effects of diabetes begin.

As a result of either of these types of diabetes, the pancreas no longer is able to detect the presence of glucose (sugar) in the blood stream, and the blood stream is also detected as being hypoglycemic (not enough blood sugar). This then triggers the release of more glucose by the action of glucagon, which makes the liver, skeletal muscle, and other tissues release their glucose stores into the blood stream. As a result, the person becomes hyperglycemic (too much blood sugar) and serious complications arise due to the presence of this blood sugar (excessive urination, muscle and fat breakdown, tissue degeneration).

For those who are at risk of diabetes due to hereditary and other factors, the best way to prevent its full effects is by simply maintaining a good diet and exercising. Even when someone is diagnosed as being pre-diabetic, he or she can exercise and maintain their weight at an acceptable level in order to stop the development.
